The Wine

Black Dog Hill Vineyard Sparkling Classic Cuvee wines are a classic blend of all three Champagne grape varieties from their own Vineyard nestled beneath Black Dog hill in the South Downs National Park.

We use Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes, selected to produce a wine with the acidity and fruit characteristics of a classic sparkling wine.

Only using our own grapes means we and our winemaker Dermot Sugrue have complete control evidenced by the multiple awards achieved by our first vintage.

VINTAGE 2011, Classic Cuvee

The result of the brilliantly warm Indian summer of 2011, our first vintage is a classic blend of all three Champagne grape varieties. Disgorged in March 2015 after 33 months on lees, this perfectly aged, classically styled sparkling wine is rich, ripe with Pinot fruit very much to the fore. This is combined with a crisp, vivid acidity which balances a core of fine pear and citrus. The finish is characterised by persistent, yeast-complexed fruit reminiscent of hazelnut and brioche. The well integrated dosage suggests a wine with an impressive ability to age, particularly as the Chardonnay component of this blend is still in an early phase.

VINTAGE 2013

The result of the brilliantly warm Indian summer of 2011, our first vintage is a classic blend of all three Champagne grape varieties.

VINTAGE 2013, Classic Cuvee

Disgorged in April 2018 this pale, shimmering gold 2013 Classic Cuvée has all the freshness and precision we’ve come to associate with Black Dog Hill’s celebrated fizz over the past seven years. Extra time on the lees has lent it more texture and depth on the palate while giving the nose greater savoury complexity. Hallmark lemon zest, quince and apple blossom overlie those freshly baked pastry and biscuit aromas. The lingering finish keeps you coming back for more, the flavours evolving in the glass each time you do. This would pair very well with roast turkey as well as all manner of seafood.

VINTAGE 2014

Eagerly anticipated follow up to the award winning 2013. This is another classic cuvee to savour.

VINTAGE 2014, Classic Cuvee

Unmistakably Black Dog Hill and undoubtedly the best vintage of Classic Cuvée since the 2011. This has all those fragrant apple blossom, citrus, brioche and biscuit aromas we love but with even greater structure and poise on the palate. The Chardonnay component gives the wine its racy style and drive while the Pinot Noir offers body, ripeness and red berry fragrance. Superbly balanced with impressive length, this is an elegant example of English sparkling wine from a producer at the top of their game.
